Boliden Partners Hypex Bio for Eco-Friendly Explosives.

 


Boliden, the leading mining operator, has recently made a groundbreaking move by entering into an agreement with Hypex Bio, a Swedish explosives supplier, for the production and delivery of a revolutionary environmentally friendly explosive. This innovative explosive not only significantly reduces the need for nitrogen treatment of water but also improves the climate performance by approximately 400 tons of CO2 per year.


Peter Bergman, the General Manager of The Boliden area, emphasizes the importance of being at the forefront of technological advancements and implementing them early on. He believes that this collaboration, along with the electrification of transportation and machinery, marks a crucial step towards conducting mining operations that are essentially fossil-free.


Under the agreement, Boliden and Hypex will work together to establish a production facility at the Kankberg mine and ensure the delivery of nitrate-free explosives. The supply and service agreement spans over five years, starting in 2024, with an expected production quantity of 400-450 tonnes, which will effectively meet the annual needs of the Kankberg mine.


This partnership not only showcases Boliden's commitment to sustainable practices but also sets a precedent for the mining industry as a whole. By embracing environmentally friendly solutions, Boliden is leading the way towards a greener and more responsible mining sector.
