Microsoft Aids Rural Hospitals Against Cyberattacks

 

Microsoft Corp. made an announcement on Monday about a fresh cybersecurity initiative aimed at assisting hospitals that cater to over 60 million people residing in rural America. In 2023, the healthcare sector witnessed a higher number of ransomware attacks compared to any other critical infrastructure sector, with ransomware attacks against the healthcare sector rising by almost 130%. These cybersecurity attacks disrupt healthcare operations nationwide and directly jeopardize patient care and the essential functioning of hospitals. In rural communities, these attacks can be particularly devastating, especially for smaller, independent Critical Access and Rural Emergency hospitals that have limited resources to prevent and address security risks. Often, these hospitals are the sole healthcare option available for miles in the communities they serve.

According to the National Rural Health Association, rural health clinics are among the primary targets for cyberattacks. The newly introduced Microsoft Cybersecurity Program for Rural Hospitals is specifically designed to cater to the unique cybersecurity requirements of these organizations. It will provide free and low-cost technology services, along with complimentary training and support, to these hospitals.
